Lapiday lab address:

217 N Paterson St, Madison, WI 53703

Lab manager:

Bob Thornton

MGMC has operated a lapidary lab open to lab-certified club members since 2009. The lab is currently located as 217 N Paterson St, right next to Burnie's Rock Shop on Johnson St. The lab offers a variety of equipment including saws, grinders, and polishers.

To use the lab, one must first be lab certified. The most common way to become lab certified is to take one of several series of lapidary classes offered throughout the year. If you already have lapidary experience, please contact the lab manager for alternative methods of certification.

Open lab sessions are typically held in four hour blocks on weekends, but may occasionally be held during the week. Open labs are organized on the MGMC facebook page.

  1. Lapidary lab use is limited to active club members that have been certified by the lab manager.
  2. All Lapidary lab users will sign-off on the shop procedures and guidelines on the waiver form.
  3. All lab users must participate in clean-up of equipment they use and the common areas. The shop supervisor will provide guidance.
  4. Lab users shall tie up loose hair and prevent wearing of excessively loose clothing while using equipment for safe operation.
  5. The lab supervisor on duty will retain the right to refuse access to equipment by anyone based on appropriate dress, attitude, or having a clear state of mind.
  6. Non-compliance with these requirements may result in loss of privileges for the Madison Gem and Mineral Club lapidary lab use.
